Made in Horten. Hackathon

During Made in Horten Sprout USN held a hackathon in the autumn 2022. Six companies took part in the hackathon:

  • Horten Kommune
  • 7Sense technology
  • Kongsberg Maritime
  • Easy Ad
  • Techni
  • Zimmer and Peacock

Students-participants were divided into teams in advance and received cases from the companies. Each team was provided with a mentor from the company, who helped throughout the preparation for the event at the event itself. On the day of the hackathon, the participants met in person for the first time and had to solve the cases and prepare presentations within a limited time frame. Afterwards, all team members presented their solution in front of the panel and the audience. Afterwards, the winning team received an award of 20,000NOK and all participants received certificates to a pizzeria for 500NOK. Everything ended with a buffet and a small party with representatives of all the companies and students.

Why a hackathon is a great idea for students and companies alike.

  1. Learning Opportunities: Hackathons provide students with the opportunity to learn new skills, work in teams, and gain hands-on experience in solving real-world problems. Companies can also benefit from the fresh perspectives and creative solutions that students bring to the table.
  2. Networking: Hackathons are a great way for students to network with peers and industry professionals. Companies can use hackathons as a way to identify potential talent and recruit new employees.
  3. Innovation: Hackathons encourage innovation and creativity, leading to the development of new products, services, and solutions. This can be valuable for both students and companies in terms of generating new ideas and staying competitive in their respective industries.
  4. Collaboration: Hackathons provide an opportunity for students to work together in teams, fostering collaboration and teamwork skills. Companies can also benefit from the collaborative nature of hackathons, as it allows them to see how different teams work together and identify potential areas for improvement.
